Kira Awards: Winners at annual gala say they've shown information technology companies can thrive in province

The Daily Gleaner/Ray Bourgeois
The notion that being based in New Brunswick might stymie their chances of success never occurred to the inventors of an award-winning nanotechnology product that may change the way people use their iPhones in the future.

In fact former UNB computer engineering student Kumaran Thillainadarah and his professor, Felipe Chibante of Fredericton, thought quite the opposite. "I think if we tried to do this somewhere else, like a very saturated U.S. market, it would have been very hard for us," Thillainadarah said. "As soon as I had an idea and a business plan, the business and university community helped a lot. I was sent in the right direction able to get in touch with people at Google and Nokia."

FRYPE: Young business leaders get chance to network and establish roots

The Daily Gleaner/Ray Bourgeois The organizers of the Fredericton Region Young Professionals and Entrepreneurs are hoping they'll network, forge new partnerships and collaborations, and generate ideas for business opportunities and community projects.

It's all part of the reason for the burgeoning community network, which is co-ordinated by officials from Enterprise Fredericton.

The group has held one event so far and will host an educational session Tuesday between 5-7 p.m. at the Crowne Plaza Hotel.

Chrystal Hallihan, a business development officer with Enterprise Fredericton, said the idea of forming a network for young professionals, entrepreneurs and students between the ages of 19-35 evolved out of the success of the Fredericton Chamber of Commerce's monthly after-hours networking events.

Message from the Chair

May the Times Ahead be Just as Interesting

By Susanne Alexander, Chair of Enterprise Fredericton

May you live in interesting times — or so goes an apocryphal Chinese proverb. How accurate a description of the last year. A federal and a provincial election. Major investments in Fredericton’s economy by private and public sources. A growing population. Higher rates of employment. And an increasingly diverse, multi-lingual population.

Last year, the Fredericton-Oromocto area was the only region in New Brunswick to experience an increase in employment. In 2010, employment rose by 2,900 and the unemployment rate dropped to less than 6.9%, well below the provincial average. This bears out a long-term trend of steady growth in the region over the past decade, with the exception, of course, of 2008-2009.

Enterprise Fredericton will unveil a new investment strategy this fall.

The initiative will be called Invest Greater Fredericton and it will include a broader-based response to investment opportunities, said Enterprise Fredericton CEO Doug Motty on Tuesday.

"In the past, we've had investment attraction strategies almost based on sectors: the IT sector, the engineering sector, manufacturing and so on," he said after the organization's annual community advisory forum.
